A few years back, owning a dual-SIM mobile phone was considered a luxury–there were jokes cracked on people who owned two dual-SIM mobile phones: how could they manage so many contact numbers!

A couple of years back, almost everybody who owned a smartphone had a dual-SIM cell phone because almost all the companies started offering this feature as a standard one. Right from Micromax, Motorola, and Samsung etc.–all the newly launched sets had dual-SIM capability. RAM was low usually 1 GB and the processors were also slow. Cameras were also not that sharp. Batteries were not that bad. The SIM size, however, kept on decreasing from standard to micro and than to nano size.

Then started the push for real smartphones which would try to emulate or eventually replace various other gadgets including laptops (for certain people), and even digital cameras.

Amazing battery life coupled with great processor and RAM up to 8 GB is offered nowadays. People don’t consider a battery life good if it does not last the whole day.

However, in between this, a new slot emerged which which would fit both a SIM card (micro) or a memory card. This slot if called hybrid slot. You can use either two SIM cards or one SIM card and a memory card.

Now, why companies are pushing for hybrid card

In my opinion, if I have a phone which has decent features including 2 GB RAM, 5-inch screen size, up to 3,000 mAH battery life and a decent processor, I won’t go for a high-end phone. I own a Nikon D3100 and therefore don’t need a great rear camera in my phone. So, I opted to buy Lenovo P1M Vibe mobile phone. It costed me around 7K at that time. It supports 4G, is dual-SIM and also has a separate memory card slot. I use Idea, Reliance Jio and a 32 GB memory card. The internal memory of the phone is 16 GB.

Now, I wanted to buy a similar camera for my father. However, there is no recently launched camera in the market that has similar features. Either I buy a higher range camera where I spend around 10-13K or use one SIM only. Jio is offering free calls and data but I can’t use it with any phone whether it’s Mi, Lenovo, ASUS, or even Samsung. Either I compromise on memory or SIM.

The companies are pushing for hybrid SIM slot because they want to make customers accustomed to using phones with higher internal memory which comes at a high price rather than using an external memory card, which is rather cheap.

I know there are few minor other enhancements but smartphones around the range of 7-8K with 16 GB memory, 2GB RAM, decent processor and battery life, dual-SIM capacity with a separate memory slot are perfect fit for a mid-range user.

Sadly, I don’t see companies coming back to this design.

Why Moto G4 is lowered priced and needs additional promotional offers

I remember buying Moto G in 2013 and feeling delighted because it offered almost all the functionalities and seamless integration with various tools that Google offered. The features were acceptable and the working of the phone was nice.

The battery backup was not ultra great but manageable. The only problem I faced was overheating, that too only on few occasions.

Moto G2 was also a great hit with the crowd. However, since then, various other companies have launched their mobile phones in India and they have beaten Moto G brand fair and square.

Redmi Note 3, for example, is a great comparison. It offers almost everything identical at a similar price. However, check the battery life. Moreover, Redmi Note 3 does not have a heating problem.

The processor of both Moto G4 and Mi Note 3 is almost similar.

Camera is better in Mi Note 3. Battery is also better. RAM and ROM in both the sets are similar. The only advantage with Moto G4 is Android version.

The price of Mi Note 3 is 12,000/- and so is for Moto G4.

In my opinion, I will go for Mi Note 3 instead of Moto G4 because of battery life and better camera. I can deal with the lower version of Android.

It is no surprise that Moto G4 needs additional promotional offers to sell while Mi Note 3 is hardly available on various ecommerce sites!

On 21st December 2016, users were hooked to the Mi website to order Mi VR Play to enjoy a really good virtual reality glasses. My friend Lokesh did the same–he got his order through in the very first attempt and he was really excited to receive it. Yesterday, all his hopes dashed, because this VR glass does not have a head strap.

No doubt that Mi has very clearly written it but the excitement of ordering it from Mi hardly allows a common user to read the whole sentence. It is certified functional with Google CardBoard, and that’s it. The user tends to miss where it says ‘…do not include a head strap.’

So, if you want a VR glass with a head strap, you have to look at other options.

Lokesh says that after using Ant VR, which didn’t perform as expected, he was really looking forward to this product. However, he says that without a head strap, it is really cumbersome to hold the gadget and enjoy the immersive view of the videos. The phones are usually heavy and it becomes a burden for the hand to hold the gadget–he mentioned that after 5-7 minutes, he could no longer hold it.

The plus side of Mi VR Play is that quality is good and it worked well with OnePlus 2 phone. It works well with higher dpi phones and the ones that have full HD view.

Works With: Google Cardboard

Verdict: Mi could have clinched the deal had it given the head strap too. Right now, it may not go well with users.

Lenovo has been launching K-series phones for quite some now and customers are looking eagerly waiting for new phones with better features and lesser price.

The Note series has been popular with customers from several brands including Samsung, Mi, and Lenovo. Multiple upgrades have been made by almost all of them. However, with the debacle of Samsung Note 7, the focus turned towards Mi and Lenovo.

Lenovo K6 Note was much anticipated but its price didn’t go well with the customers. It also does not have VoLTE technology.

On 27th, Flipkart will be launching the sale of Lenovo K6 Power,

which has almost similar configuration barring 1-2 minor downgrades from K6 Note. However, the price is more than 30% less, which is a huge boost for consumers looking for Android phones below 10,000/-.
